Sure ... you need still need to be able to call people with regular phone lines... so you still need a carrier with a gateway to the PSTN which means you still have a phone bill.

Here's aart of a news story in the local paper:

"...The blackout caused additional problems for the city itself as all municipal telephone lines, including those of
Hydro-Sherbrooke, also went. The city uses an IP telephone network that operates through the Internet and computers.
This, of course, made it impossible for city departments or Hydro-Sherbrooke to receive complaints and made it difficult for communication among employees and departments."

So for anyone working for the city or "essential services", they couldn't communicate with those new fangle-dangled phones when they most needed it!

I don't know about your area, but if the local authorities couldn't communicate anytime there's a power blackout, that sounds pretty scary to me! I wonder if that's an issue in the areas effected by "Sandy". :dance:
