As of Dec 31/12 Verizon has eliminated support for 900 telephone numbers in the US.

I never warmed up to 1 (900) service. I remember people could request Verizon place a restriction on their telephone lines so that 1 (700) and 1 (900) calls could not be made. With the proliferation of smart phones & tablets, the service just doesn't make any sense at this point.

In the comp.dcom.telecom thread on usenet, someone mentioned that in Denmark, they have 0900 numbers that are used all the time for pay-per-minute calls and not for "sex" lines.

Maybe if we had used 900-976 as premium and all the rest as small charge pay calls, it would have had better success.

Good riddance to it.

The problem is that the phone companies don't want to do third party billing and be stuck with collecting the money. I guess when it started out those companies that used 900 numbers figured that it was a guaranteed way to collect because the phone company could cut off the customer's phone service if they refused to pay. Then the laws were changed and they have to handle disputes. Ain't worth the trouble.
