I use both Paypal and the Square reader. Because I only take about 3 credit cards a year, it doesn't mean much to me to have to pay 3% settlement on both debit and credit cards. The Square is easier for me as the money is sent to my checking account instead of my Paypal account so I use that the most.

Carl, whats the charge for the square reader, is there a monthly charge, if you use it or not, or just a per use charge. Is that 3% or is it less. Thanks

The reader is free. They charge 2.75% per transaction if the card is present. If you don't swipe the card, then it's not cheap. 3.5% plus 15 cents. The money appears in your account in about 2 days.

Intuit Go Payment has a similar arrangement. There is no monthly fee and they provide a reader that plugs into an Android phone. The transaction appears in your Quickbooks Pro software.

With all the variables involved, I am amazed when any voice and data technology works like it is supposed to.

I use square all the time. Works well, and just emails the customer a copy of the receipt. You can buy the reader at an Apple store for $10, but they then apply a $10 credit to your account.

you can sign up here and they will mail the reader to you for free

It does work great , there is no reason for any business not to take CC now . In fact Ive heard that some restaurants have servers running the charge right at the table

Most of the major restaurants here in Canada have been doing the credit cards table side for the last few years.

It stated when major banks started to replace the old mag stripe cards with the dual stripe / imbedded security chip.

What I found new this year was going into some of the trendy ladies clothing stores at Christmas (had to get gift cards!!!) was the floor staff had the readers that attached to what looked like an IPhone, and they could take your payment without getting into the cashier line. I don't know if they paid a little more on the transaction as they did not take a pin number to verify the card but you had to "sign" with you finger. I was in and out of one store in about 4 minutes.
