Had a customer call me today and ask me something I have never had to deal with. They wanted to know if they could set up a remote IP phone at the bosses house but the office has a dynamic IP. They just switched to a new data provider and now have a dynamic IP address to lower cost. I don't recall seeing a place in the setup on the IP phone for a URL, only an IP address? From what I read in the book, it shouldn't work, but I hate telling long-time customers no. Any info would be appreciated, thank you in advance.
When I die, I want to go peacefully in my sleep like my grandfather, not screaming and panicking like the passengers in his car.

Unfortunately dynamic IP's are not guaranteed to stay. You can still give it a try. 99% of the time, the IP address will not change for the customer coming from the ISP. Just set the public ip for the system with the dynamic and put it into the phone. Worst case scenario is that you have to go and do a program change if the ip does happen to change when the modem does a release and renew. More than likely though it will not change.

It's painfull doing this (i've had dynamic ip's change several times a day).
As you need to update the public ip in the phone and in the system

You could use a VPN and use private IP on the phone - at least you don't have to change anything on the system and phone after a change.
With a dynamic DNS service it should be possible for the VPN to find the new address after an address change and reconnect, although there is likely to be a break in connectivity whilst it sorts itself out.
If you can't find a free / low cost dynamic DNS service, and extra equipment is required for the VPN (i.e. there isn't something in the exisiting routers to do it), them changing to a data service without a static address may end up being a false economy.
