We're running Axxess 5.346 over a T1/E1 with PRI. We've been getting Caller ID number only on our display.

I've been looking into why we can't get name and number and have been told that it has something to do with our software version and possibly a limitation of one of our cards (possibly because we have a CPU and not a CPC). Along these lines, my Intertel vendor tells me that there's a way to switch between name and number. We can't apparently have both at the same time, but we can have one or the other.

If we wanted to switch from number to name Caller ID... where is the change made? Our provider, Cbeyond, is already transmitting both... at least, that's what they say.

Your PRI T-1 must be using NI-2 protocol to receive name. That's 'National ISDN 2'. A 5.346 Axxess is capable of supporting this protocol, there is no issue w/ s/w ver. or h/w.

The first step is to verify that the PBX is programmed for NI-2. Go to System\Cabinets\T1 Primary Rate Interface Card\Central Office Switch Type. If the switch type is anything other than National ISDN 2, then you cannot get name. You will have to put order in to have yer protocol changed in the PBX and the circuit. If it is NI-2, then the next step is to prove the provider is full of it.

It is very easy w/ an Axxess to monitor the Q.931 D-channel message stream. If yer vendor doesn't know how to do this, find a new vendor. This message stream is spit out serially from the T-1 card and will tell you in black and white whether or not you are actually getting name. I work for a CLEC and alot of carriers (even us) sometimes get that screwed up, I can stop CO switch techs dead in their tracks w/ a D-channel capture off an Axxess. Nothing makes me happier.

The feature code to toggle name or number display is 'Infinty', 379. Name is on by default.

Thanks for the info, superfoneguy. I did verify that the T-1 switch type is already set to National ISDN 2.

So, it looks like Cbeyond has screwed this up from the start. I'd been on the phone with them several times and they swore up and down that they were transmitting correctly.

I'll get our vendor to monitor the stream. Can I possibly do this with a laptop and something like HyperTerminal?

Yes. There is a serial port on the front of the T-1 card, plug into it w/ the same setup you would use for DB programming and set Hyperterm for 9600, 8,N,1. Once connected hit enter and you should see the OLMN command prompt. Type 'DON' and you should start seeing D-channel messages. A period ends any command. A question mark will give you the menu.

Incoming calls will show setup info and you should see the calling number and the number called. The actual numbers are preceded w/ and '8', so 8005551212 should look like 88 80 80 85 85 85 81 82 81 82.

Maybe you could log some calls to a file and e-mail that to someone at Cbeyond. Of course that only works if the people that see it know what they are looking at :- )... Good luck.

I just got callerID a few days ago and haven't been getting name. The provider said it would be here on monday, it's now tuesday and not here.
I looked at the PRI card via Db Programming and it says ISDN Switch Type AT&T 5ESS Custom. Will this allow name?

The vendor was onsite when we switched up to the PRI N2 and he seemed to know what he was doing.

Thanks!

5ESS does not provide name. The T-1 must be provisioned as NI-2.

So in theory if i change it to an NI-2 it will work.
Anything else this will effect or is it as simple as changing it to an NI-2?

Thanks as always!

You must be sure that the T1 itself is NI-2 as well as changing the PBX config. If everything matches up, you should be fine.

Thanks for the quick reply!
I made the change and it's still not coming in with the name. Will the name and number show together on phones?

Also i am remembering back to the night we switched to the PRI and we had a conference call with the PaeTec engineer and my vendor. I remember my vendor asking what type of line it was, if it was a 4 or a 5 and the PaeTec engineer said It's a 5.

Now the same engineer told me that I should have name by today - since i didn't and i stumbled on to this post i figured it was the T1 config.

As it is currently set - NI-2 It works just as it was set as the AT&T 5ESS, so i might as well leave it as NI-2.
Also the work order I have says to upgrade to PRI NI-2...just wondering if i am missing something or if the engineer was mistaken when he said it was a "5".

I'll shoot another email off to the PaeTec engineer, and get his take on the matter.

Any Thoughts?

Thanks!
Andy

I think they were refering to 4ESS or 5ESS. That is a different protocol than NI2.
