At one of our schools we had a Bogen Multicom 2000 installed 2 years ago (after 2 generations of Ducane). We are now replacing the 20-25 year old speakers with TOA PC580RU 8ohm with 25/70 volt matching transformers (tapped at 1/2w 25v). They work well as all-call or individual room call (intercom), however they are not working as microphones for 2 way communication in intercom mode. The speaker specs are almost identical to the recommended Bogen speakers.

Any ideas guys??

Have you safed off the other taps? Do the old speakers work in intercom mode, it just stops when you change out the speaker with the new model? Where is the shield terminated at the speaker? (HINT: It should not be terminated anywhere but insulated from everything else) Is there a call/privacy switch in the room?

I'm sorry to hear you got a Bogen in place of your Dukane.

I'm a little confused. You state the new speakers work "individual room call (intercom)" but then say that they are not working as intercom (which is 2-way).

Did you mean to say that they work for individual room paging?

What are the brand and model of the new speakers? Are they rated to be used as mics? Did you add the transformers to the new speakers or did they come assembled to the new speakers?

Are you trained on the Bogen system? If not there is a good chance that you have a set-up or programing issue.

The Bogen Multicom 2000 sound like the Roland Borg TeleCenter systems I use to work on and if you didn't know what you were doing. Things would stop working.

THe "almost identical" comment also worries me. the part of your new speakers that isn't identical to the recommended speakers could be what is stopping them from working correctly

OP stated they are installing TOA PC580RU speakers.

I think OP means that when dialing an individual classroom, the teacher can hear the office, but the office cannot hear the teacher talk back.

That sounds to me like a privacy mode is engaged which can happen if the transformer center tap is grounded or there is a "privacy" switch enabled in the classroom.

You also raise a good point, that the programming of the system may disable that function. or that they are doing a one way page to an individual room and not properly engaging intercom mode...which is why I was curious if the old speakers work without a problem or if the old speakers have this talk back issue too.

Yes you are right, I miss read and thought he was replacing the TOA speakers.

I'm not a fan of anything TOA. Been trying to find info to repair some TOA equipment and it appears that there are nobody in the states that deals with them. Everything I find is for the UK or Canada.

Any way, I still wonder if the TOA speakers will work with the Bogen system for talk back. I know we hand a few speakers brands and types that wouldn't work as talk back speakers for the Roland Borg system.

TOA is OK with amplifiers and things. I wouldn't recommend the speakers though.
