Is it normal for a Legend system to hiss? Not hiss or static on the phones, but the power supply (a 391C1) makes an audible hiss like a slow leak in a tire.

I tried a spare 391C1 power supply, and it also hisses, so this is either normal, or I have two ailing power supplies?

coil noise tends to get worse over time... if that's what it is, i'd guess the sound is coming from the transformer or possibly the capacitors.

probably not a coincidence that we're talking about a 20+ year old phone system!

So is it just noise, or about to fail? And if it does fail, can I expect it to gracefully stop working, or do these things go out with a bang, taking out the rest of the boards? I've got spare line cards, but I'd be really grumpy if the voicemail got fried.

I've got two spare 391C1s, can I re-cap one and have it be good as new? Or should I prowl around on eBay for a NOS unit?

If an upgrade isn't in the cards, you could purchase a newer Magix carrier, remove the modules from their clamshells and install them.

Upgrading isn't an option - supporting rotary dial phones and ATL phones is a requirement. The MLX-20L admin phone is the newest phone in the house.

I know some Magix boards can be put in Legend clamshells, but how does the reverse work with no way to secure the naked boards?

The Magix carrier was designed to not need the clamshells. The carrier is metallic as opposed to the Legend's plastic carrier.

Curiosity is getting the better of me. Why are rotary dial phones being used? eh
