I have been getting more and more cases where a phone loses its connection with the PBX. I get the "Searching for IPU" on display. Changing the card/IPU address the phone is using usually fixes this. The ports are almost maxed out in the system and I was wondering if this might be the cause for connection issue. We have 8 cards, most of them 16 ports and currently there is only a few open ports available.

I ran into an issue where if I left the PDN Equipment numbers all at 0000 it auto assigned the IPT's to any card no matter what IPU address was programmed into the phone. I think I got a different error message though, something like "all resources full or busy". But next time it happens check Maintenance>Hardware Control and see if the IPU that the phone is connected to is already full. The fix was to set the PDN Equipment numbers to the cabinet/slot of the IPU of where I wanted the phone connected to.

Thats the way I usually set it up: check to see which card has ports available and then assign the ext to that card.
I just had a phone with this problem this morning. The phone is displaying searching for IPU or IPT, the card the phone is programmed 2 has 2 ports available looking under IPU configuration. I change it to another IPU card and its fixed but I keep having to do this once or twice a week on different phones.
I am seeing Disabled by Fault:DO on some of the ports, any insight on that?
To answer the first reply, of our 4 cabinets: cab1- MIPU24 in slot 7 cab2- BDKU/BDKS in 7 cab3- BSTCIU in slot 7

Some of those Disabled by Fault were ext's that were not removed from the system and no longer connected.

Make sure you don't have a IP address conflict with the phones

Thanks, I got rid of quite a few ext's that were not being used, we'll see if the problem persists.
