Nope. Nothing. Is the COM port my only option here?

It is a worry when you don't know what a straight through RS232 cable is. Straight through is for connecting DTE to DCE, Null modem is for connecting like to like. and if you have the wrong cable then you stand no chance. It is a bit like needing a crossover for Ethernet when connecting like to like.
Can you find the modem number of the card and try dialing in? Also tell us what happens when you try to connect as if it is going to retries then there is a chance you have the correct connection but the wrong login details.

Hmh. Learn something new every day I suppose. I hadn't put much thought into the fact there could be more than one kind of serial cable... But I guess there are crossover and regular Ethernet cables also...
Does the modem number fall into the dialplan of the extensions?

Also:
The cover for the KSU has "VM: 236" written on it, but that doesn't work as a password on any of the mailboxes, and you get reorder if you dial 236 from one of the phones.

SW 2 position 3 on is used for remote connection via a modem. On your card it is off for local connection. Was it always set to off? If you changed it then the card has to be reset. You might consider resetting the card if that has not been done.

All of the switches have always been set to off. I have reset the card using the make busy switch any time I adjusted one of them, but I haven't touched them.
They are all in the off position as I'm typing this, and the voicemail is up and running.

No, user name service password voice or no username at all. You will have to interrogate the system to find out the number for the VM modem, it's not in the VM.

I actually work on PABXs and the VM I deal with is the AD8 which is same system, different card and you talk to both with Cosessions, the software being identical. In my world the same cable that talks to the VM talks to the system. I would be surprised if it is different on the key systems. I stand to be corrected. You can however buy a standard Null modem adaptor to connect through so if you have a straight cable and a null modem, you should be able to connect to anything (there are exceptions that prove the rule but they are rare). I will check further on Monday with a colleague that works on Key systems and will post back if I can find anything out!
