Like the idea of a wire guard. I've been checking out some of the enclosures mentioned. While none are perfect, some can retrofit in someway with minimal effort. I'll run it by the customer and see what suits him.

I used something similar to this (they make many different models) in our middle school gym and it has survived everything thrown at it and everyone that fell on it. Note though that it seals so well that they have to leave it open. https://www.telcom-data.com/products/VIK-VE-9X12B-1.aspx

The metal cage is the way to go. I used them back when I worked for a district that had 32 school sites. We put them over everything in a gym and never had a problem one. Plexiglass and stuff like that will break when hit with a basket ball and once the kids figure that out they go out of their way to break them.
