So... I've got 2 dk's with piou, I can get smdr info out of the lower port on both of them, and one of them I can get a CODE and MODE prompt out of (which I can then do what I want with) but the other... just sits there when I plug into the supposed TTY port. the switch is set to tty not modem, there's no modem on the card to get in the way... it's not the card, because I can put either card in the system that'll talk to me and they both work... The newer system has a much newer (relatively) processor, so... did the remote/local tty procedures change somewhere between a rctua1 and an rctua4? on the 1, i can talk to the switch, on the 4... it's like there's nothing there..

thanks for any enlightenment. smile

Make sure that there's not another code 41 assigned in any other cabinet/slot.

HA! I beat you into submission, you crazy old machine!

So, for anybody who might wonder what was causing this very... annoying oddness. The battery on the processor was dead. dead dead not taking or holding a charge dead. put a new battery in it, reset everything (again) and tada, working like it should have been all along.

and yeah, part of the dead battery problem was that it kept putting code 00 for every card beyond the first. I'd give it a 41, it would appear to be there, exit programming mode, go back in, still there, exit and try to use the tty, no go... go back in again, back to 00. was driving me nuts.
