What are you Toshiba dealers doing for racks to support the Dell Virtual servers? The first one I installed, the customer had a full sized, fully enclosed 4 post rack (granted it was used as a storage closet at the time) that we were able to use and worked perfectly with the mounting brackets it comes with. Now I've got another install coming up that is replacing a wall-mounted CIX100. They have no rack at all, their network equipment is all sitting on a small plastic shelf. I can't find a smallish wall-mount rack that is deep enough for the server we are installing (server is 23.9"). About the only thing I can find is a 25U floor rack and even then that is going to be way overkill for this customer. I'd hate to park this thing on a shelf.

Any other ideas?

Would a vertical wall rack work? I have seen something along the lines of 4U 19" racks where the equipment is mounted vertically. Then "depth" is no longer a problem because you rotated the equipment so it is now "height".

We use Snap AV they have a 10U,12U, & 16U wall units that are well built and affordable. You can get them with or without a swing kit and glass lockable door.

They also have floor units with casters in the same sizes.

We were going to try a vertical rack, like the one linked by Michael Meyer, but we found rack space in the customer's existing 2 post rack.

I was looking at the link from Toshiba Bob, and finding a wall mount rack that is deep enough may be a challenge. Looking at CDW I did find a 12U floor enclosed rack that looks to be deep enough;

Usually when I see a computer closet with data equipment on shelves, or on counters, with servers sitting on the floors, etc, I think that this is a guy that really doesn't care about their data network. But sometimes when talking to the customer I find that they know it's a mess but they don't have an idea of how to fix it. I usually give them some ideas, and mention that this is something we can do for them.

I am not in sales, but it seems like there could be some potential up-selling. If it was me I would strongly suggest that the new server be put in a rack, and by the way this rack could also hold much of the data equipment and data patch patch panels. Then once everything is in a rack, you could get some new patch cords to make everything look nice.

Thanks for the replies. Do they make a 2 post rack mount kit for the R420 server? I would think that the almost 24" depth would require a little more stability than that. Mounting vertically would be the way to go then so I'll take a look at that option. I found the smaller floor racks on CDW and that is certainly an option.

For this particular customer we did have everything mounted nicely on a backboard with enough room for the IT equipment as well but you know how it goes, IT guy comes in and throws his stuff on a shelf and drapes patch cords all over the place.

Yes they do. There is an option when you order the server for a 2 or 4 post rail kit. That is what we used on my last install in a 2 post rack.
