I've found this board while looking for information about how to manage phone cabling and telephone switches for the company I work for.
I'm their system admin, and the boss decided it was better a deal if I did the work instead of the consultant we generally call in.
Is there a FAQ I can read about the general concepts, a book ? Any website would be an help. I also downloaded the user and administration guide for both the telesets and the voice-mail system we use, but couldn't find anything about the actual switch. Consultant says they cannot make it available to me. Is this normal ?
Thanks for your help.

Tell us the make and model of the phone system and any questions you may have, the techs here are very helpful and knowledgable. Manuals are availble on this site. We will help with ordinary stuff, but, will probably suggest you call a local tech when it gets difficult. Good luck, Chuck

I went to the basement to have a look, took a peek inside bost of the wall cabinets...
Looks like we are using those things:
Samsung DCS PRostar Key system with the following slots:
PSU - PSU40 SLOT1 - TRK-A1 SLOT2 - TRK-C1 SLOT3 - DLI SLOT4 - DLI SLOT5 - DLI SLOT6 - DLI SLOT7/ExpnA - Expn-A1 ROM - ROM-1
Also, right next to it is a Samsung DCS Prostar Expension Cabinet loaded with the following:
PSU - PSU40 SLOT1 - 8sli SLOT2 - DLI SLOT3 - DLI SLOT4 - SVMI-8 SLOT5 - TRK-C1 SLOT6 - empty SLOT7 - empty EXPN.B - Expn-B
Seems like Expn-B is connected to the Expn-A card in the key system by using the 'first' interface.
Now. What does that all means ?
PSU - looks like a powersupply unit.
TRK - Interface for trunk lines? What does A and C means?
DLI - Digital Line Interface ?
Expn- Expension unit. Does that mean that my system would only be able to old on more expension cabinet ?
ROM - Read only-memory. Is that where the programming and firmware is kept ?
SVMI- Voice mail. I already had to reboot that once. Seems like everything had frozen and the voicemail system neverpicked up.
Moreover, we are using different kind of teleset: Samsung iDCS 8D, Samsung Falcon 8D, Samsung DCS 128 LCD.
Where can I find the book on how to access and program my Prostar? Is there a way to swap two extension/voice mail without changing the wires in the punch-down block? Is there any kind of tutorial, FAQ, primer, book, e-book, website for new telephony technician.
Thanks a lot.

You have a mix of equipment! The SVMI is a newer product as well as the iDCS telephone sets. That equipment has electronic documentation. The older equipment has only paper manuals direct from Samsung to the dealers. You mention a consultant, is he a Samsung Dealer? There are some things that you can do yourself but there are many things that you can mess up if you are not careful. You should post your questions on this system in the Samsung forum.
