Kind of surprised that the SLiCs aren't fed from batteries for protection purposes. Shouldn't that clean any input variances? (going by what I understand from uninterruptible power supply knowledge) Wouldn't solve PSUs being blown though.

Had the same problem with a couple of sites with Samsung 100 cabinets. Blowing cards and PSU's. however these customers had Verizon copper lines and when they switched to Comcast the problem went away. Go figure.

I guess I should have given a little more background. The SLiC was on a very long copper line from the CO in very rural area. The batteries needed to be changed for quite a while. When there was a power loss for more than a few minutes, the SLiC would go down. The power events damaged the power supplies as well. So, this situation was a double whammy for Verizon.

You are correct, normally, the batteries and power supplies provide protection and filtering.

Gotcha. My friend told me a similar story, but with a Fujitsu SONET multiplexer at a state gov't building. It took many phone calls for them to finally come out and replace a string of batteries. You'd think they'd have a little urgency given the state gov't is one of their largest subscribers and probably most important.

Then again, this is the same LEC whose fix to the Gong CO Alarm bells going off every 10 seconds is to put paper between the hammer and gong to make less noise. I kid you not. Found that gem today while working a trouble call.

LOL....don't fix the problem, treat the symptom. Like an old CO switchman told me one time "trouble is leaving here, ok."
