Hi,
Is it possible to connect an Asterisk system to an Axxess system that has outgoing trunks. The Asterisk system would have to be able to reach outside numbers and Axxess extensions.
We are considering getting another T1 card for the Axxess system and a Digium T1 card for the Asterisk box. Then connect them with a crossover T1 cable.
Is this possible, has anyone done this before? Do we need a T1 card with a PRI PAL chip or without? What exactly does a PRI PAL chip do?

I've done some experimenting with such a setup, but am without a networking license so Q.Sig signalling was out, and doing network nodes were out. That limits your interconnect to being national ISDN 10 digital dialing over trunks, and I wanted a bit tighter integration.
So, it could work depending on what you wanted to do, and what kind of licensing you have.
The T1 card with the PRI PAL chip lets you do PRI signalling on that T1 as opposed to just T1.

Sure, it can be done. But as dpmcintyre said, it depends what you are trying to integrate.
You would almost definitely want a PRI. You would probably want to map DID's to extensions in the axxess and asterisk in order to get something that seemed integrated. I'd also recommend sangoma over digium but that's more preference. Either would work.

Well we didn't get a card with a PRI chip due to cost.
We did manage to get outgoing trunk access from the asterisk by using OPX trunks. We can't dial into Asterisk from Axxess but Asterisk can now call into the PSTN.
Not really sure if we are going to mess with it more, cause we are going to be using Asterisk as a dialer. So outgoing access is the most important, incoming not really.
Thanks.
