A customer of ours recently had IP phones installed in a satellite location a couple of thousand miles away. Therefore, any external calls they make at the satellite location route out over the PRI at headquarters. Right now, this means they can't call 911. It'll take the fire truck days to get there!

The phone system is capable of sending a different phone number when 911 is dialed. I thought great, we will just purchase a couple of DID's with the remote area code!....but that idea was squashed quickly. Windstream does not support routing 911 calls and sending PSAP address info based on caller ID. They will only route and send data based on the physical location of the circuit.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Right now I am thinking a SIP trunk from a third party might be the solution.

SIP is the way I would go.

You may also want to mention what system you're talking about.

I think the solution may be dependent on the specific model phone system. I know of a couple Mitel options

In this case, a Vertical Wave. If I'm reading the docs correctly, the only feature it has to help would be altering caller ID sent on 911 calls.....but the carrier doesn't support it,

Would ordering a single bare-bones POTS line for that location be an option?

If using a Wave, can't you use RSGM units at the remote sites with the user's home landline as the CO line connected to it? That way, any 911 calls made from this station can be set to default to the local CO line.

We did not install this system, so I don't speak Vertical totally fluently. I'm guessing an RGSM is similar to a SIP FXO adapter? Basically makes a POTS line useable as a SIP trunk to the Wave?

This particular remote warehouse already has a left over POTS line for a defunct alarm system. My guess is they would go for a big red emergency phone on the POTS line before the RGSM.

It is a device that provides an IP phone connection, an SLT extension and a local CO line input. It can be configured so that the local CO line is seized when 911 is dialed or if the IP connection fails. I recall that it was originally designed to allow a remote user to have a fax machine. It's not the easiest device to configure, but it sounds like what you're looking for.

I second the POTS line. Tons easier and you can use it for fax and security stuff. Last thing you need is liability. IMHO

You may want to check with Windstream again and tell them you are trying to use "their" E911 serveice. Most carriers have it and are to be required to, its just getting to talk to the correct person to make it happen.

I just went through this same thing with Frontier on a PRI off of a main office which had remote offices with just phones in those offices, after some long conversations and their E911 department we got it up and running on the use of several DID's.
