We have a customer with an XTS600, using the MPBE card. The internal modem has started answering as a fax rather than a modem. It doesn't matter if we call it via a real copper line on a 5ESS or one of the DID numbers on their PRI. A hard reboot of the system will restore the modem to normal operation for just one call, but it reverts to fax after that. I know that there is no programming for the modem other than baud rate, and there are no hardware settings, so can anyone think of anything else that can be done?

This is a weird one, I don't remember the internal modems having the ability to be a fax. Could this be some other problem? LIke the modem is not disconnecting from the first call so it squeals when you call back into it. I seem to remember some issue like that. Is it possible to reach this system via the web?

Derrick, we have a POTS line dedicated to this modem in addition to a DID number. I already expected that we might have issues with the DID number (and we did) when the customer switched service providers to a SIP-type PRI service. The dedicated POTS line is a real copper one, on a 5ESS that has worked fine for years. We don't have web access to this system yet. We are getting clean disconnect signalling, etc. on this line, so I really doubt this is due to an external issue. Normally in the past, a hard reboot would resolve this issue, and it still does for one programming session. The next and subsequent attempts definitely receive fax tones, which is a new condition. There's no audible handshaking going on prior to the call dropping.

We may end up connecting an external modem to the COM port since this system is very active and has many programming requests weekly. Another option we're looking into is attaching a de-commissioned PC to the system with remote access into it. That would be the best idea since we wouldn't need to drag a laptop in during service visits, not to mention being able to do local backups, etc.

Isn't the modem just a daughter board on the 600? (Just wonderin' without having to crack open a system to look at it). Like Derrick, I too don't know of any Fax option on the on-board modem. I've still got lots of spare parts but I'm sure you do too! But my largest 600 site also had networking for 4 other locations and since we were constantly programming various items, installing web access was ideal for us!

No, it's built-in on the MPBE and no, there's no fax option with it. I'm sure it's a characteristic of the chip set they used that got knocked into action somehow. It probably received a mode switch command as a result of line garbage, but I really don't feel like digging that far into it. With that said, I'm going to just go with an external modem with that copper line going straight into it. We'll be able to get 38.4K that way, which will help with the time spent on backups every few days. If that ever fails, hopefully the on-board modem will function at that time for one call.
