Hi Guys,

I was wondering if the ITT K403A Music on hold card is a plug & play card for the 501 KSU or do you need a separate card slot rack in order for it to work? I can't recall if this is the one if you plug it in a empty slot on the KSU and it blows up.

Also since the extra card racks so hard to find, what would option to get this card to work or just give up on MOH?

Thanks Brian

Looking at the picture here: http://stepswitch.us/1A2-KTUs/KE-403A.htm (I don't have the practice) it appears to be an 18-pin card, and I suspect that you cannot just plug and play.
I believe, from memory, that you need to plug it into a specially-wired card slot that allows you to provide (at least) A battery, ground, music pair input, and 6 pairs output, one for each line that gets the MOH feature.

Maybe some other old phone guy who worked on ITT Kellog systems can shed some light.

Right on, Arthur.

You most definitely CANNOT just plug this card into any slot. This card has six isolated music outputs that feed to each line card. In addition, there is a music input and "A" (filtered, or talk) battery/ground. ITT made a 259B or 359A card mount (one or two slots, respectively) that mounted within the spare space of a 501 or 512 KSU. The two slot one had screw terminals on the back of this mounting that allowed field connections to be made, while the single-slot one had a pre-wired tail that connected to the 66 blocks within the KSU's back plane.

Thanks Arthur and Ed,

I bet the ITT 259B or 359A is so hard to find that chances are that I will never find one.

Don't despair. They come up occasionally on Ebay. You can also take a socket out of a scrapped KSU or from a 584 panel and fabricate a metal bracket to mount it. 551B & C shoeboxes also occasionally come up. I may have one you can cannibalize, if that's the route you want to take.

I saw a situation where a member here obtained a field-modified 584 panel. The previous owner/installer stripped the first card slot's connector down to just the A battery connections, then wire-wrapped their own connections to the line cards in slots 2-7. Since the first slot is technically the last one with regard to wiring, no daisy-chains had to be broken or extended. It was really a quite creative solution to this dilemma.
