I've been in my new job now for a couple of weeks and had to do a couple of extension moves which have all gone fine. All the endpoints around the building are exactly the same and receive an RK45 jack for either data or phone. The other end terminates at the wiring closet where they are patched into either a switch or the a phone extension, respectivly. In order to plug a phone into one of these jacks, an adapter has to be used and there appears to be two types: Master and Secondary. My queston is, what the difference between the two?

Thanks in advance.

Am I correct in assuming that you have some form of splitter plugged into the jack labeled "master" and "secondary"?

If so, there are many manufacturers that make these. I would assume that if this is the case, they are marked this way so that if you are using them at both ends, you would be able to identify which jack is which.

Maybe if you can elaborate on your situation, I can give you a less "open-ended" answer.

How come there's always enough time to go back and fix it a second time?

Wait wait I think I got it, no adapter is needed because you can plug a 6 pin mod plug into an 8 pin jack. the only question is what equipment you have so we could better help you [Linked Image from sundance-communications.com]

Ok, the adaptor that takes an RJ11 and converts it into an RJ45 has 'PABX Master' and 'PABX Secondary' on the side of it, respectivly.

We've got an iDCS100 which is linked up to an RJ45 patch panel that has all the extension numbers written on it.

Hope this helps

Is this the product you are trying to explain? if this is the case it says there the secondary is for different ext to use the same ext number as another existing phone (I guess I don't see the point). Are all sockets in the UK 8p8c? And why would you want to use two phones on the same connection at the same time? (Is my punctuation correct?)
