I have a Classic Mail system with a faulty hard drive.

Does anyone have a copy of the software that goes on the hard drive?

I found that my hard drive was the old SCSI (pronounced "scuzzy" in computer language) type . I would also need to know WHAT COMPUTER was used to format the hard drive.. EG Texas Instruments, TRS-80, Etc.

A lot of the older computers used SCSI hard drives, but had different formatting techniques. The current hard drive in my CM had a sticker from Apple computers. But, when I stuck it in an Apple computer as a slave drive, the computer saw the drive, but said the formatting was incompatible. So, at least I know that it was NOT formatted on an Apple computer system.

I know there are replacement hard drive kits for about $150.00 on eBay, but I'd rather learn how to format a new SCSI hard drive, and put the software on it myself. If I have the knowledge, then if the hard drive fails again, I can fix it myself and save the $150.00

Any help you can provide is appreciated in advance,

Wm Lewis

I've been after this same thing for quite some time, with no luck. Posts everywhere, including here, but best I see is someone with another unit available.

What search keys bring these repair kits up on eBay? I've had constant searches keeping an eye out for them and full replacement units, but nothing ever comes back on it?

As far as the software, you essentially have to jump in via the serial port from a laptop with a basic 9-pin cable to scope out what's inside. But you do need the original software disks to format and load the software into the unit.

In our case, from the status lights, we believe once the drive was loaded to the point it hit a bad spot - it crashed. We had quite a bit of mailboxes and voicemail inside, but when we added one more to push it into a hardly-used section of the drive that was about all she wrote.

We've seen quotes up to $1,200 to rehab it, I've got one on the table for $310 to do the same job. But it could take a hike a week later, so we're with you in hoping to find a copy of those original disks to do the job ourselves. Sadly, those who have it aren't parting with it and I haven't even had an offer from someone to sell me a copy for our internal use.

Box is solid, power pack's perfect, MB isn't smoked or otherwise. Just that pesky HDD taking a hike. And we'd love to drop a larger SCSI (though ours was a Quantum 40MB that came back as MFM, which might false out as a SCSI drive because of it's age/format) like an 80/120MB just to stretch the max capacity a bit.

If you do find anything, please drop me a line and let me know! Thanks!
