Is there a way to change telephone names thru the att. console? New to Merlin Legend

You can change the name from the console. It has been a while since I have programmed from the phone. If you have the book, you should be fine. Or you can get the book off of the Avaya website. I believe you have to enter multiple numbers (ie. 21 for the letter B). But check it out in the book because it has been sometime since I programmed through the phone.

You can change the name display from the programming console. It is under Labeling > Extension

Then you find lettera A through F are buttons on the big display, while letters G through Z are the "line" buttons on the phone. If you are using an MLX-20L, the letters are moulded into the plastic under the desi's, on a 4424LD+ the letters are printed on the reverse side of the desi's.

If nothing else, count them out, skipping the first row:
