Hello.

Has anyone ever had the Ethernet card on their phone system show a Mac address of " FFFFFFFFFF" ?

Does this mean the LAN card if fried and need to be replaced?

Thanks.

Not enough information! What phone system? How did you determine that the MAC was FFFFFFFFFFFF (arp, cam table, setting in configuration, etc.)?

If you can see the MAC on the network it is probably not dead.

If the MAC is configurable on your system, it will probably not work when set to FFFFFFFFFFFF, as this is a layer 2 broadcast address.

From my experience, when a NIC dies the MAC changes to FOOF-DEAD-BEEF (that's a joke [Linked Image from sundance-communications.com] )

Post back if we can help. And, please complete your profile!

Its a Samsung system.

There was a very big storm and the system generated a bunch of errors about the T1 being out of sync, it went offline for about 2 minutes then came back up.(the system did this itself)

However, ever since that time, the mac address has been " FFFFFFFFFFF"

In program MMC 830 which is used to view/change Ethernet settings in a Samsung.

I can change the IP address, gateway, etc.. However the MAC address does not let me change.

I also can't seem to connect with the PCMMC software which is a PC based software to interface with the system (I think its because of that Mac address or an indication of a bad Ethernet card)

I was wondering if anyone experiences a LAN card with that problem on any system out there or has any ideas on what to do.

Thanks for your help.

I have no experience with the Samsung system, but a lot of experience with networking. Out of curiosity, what was the MAC address before the lightning strike? I've not known of NIC's on which you could change the MAC; usually this is set in production and does not need to be changed. Since there are 256 (to the 8th power) possible MAC's they're USUALLY unique (I had 2 SMC NIC's on a computer network one time with the same MAC!).

To answer another implied question, you probably would still be able to change IPs, Gateway, etc. if the NIC were fried.
