I'm trying to help out a small firm that got ripped off terribly by a guy who was to install a phone system and computer network for them. I came in a week or so back and cleaned up the network, and now they want me to finish the phone system. The system is a Merlin and I'm an Inter-Tel guy. The last Merlin I dealt with was back in 89. The system is cabled and basically working, but the phones have no intercom or page capabilities, and you can't transfer to an extention. There are also no speed dials configured so that you can see when someone is on the phone. Does anyone have a soft copy of a programming manual, station programming card or whatever Lucent offers? If not can someone walk me through programming up the phones? Can it be done from the phones is it all done from a laptop? Thanks in advance!

Everything Merlin is at https://support.avaya.com Do you know which Merlin? Classic, Plus, II, Legend, Magix? Maybe can help without wading through all the manuals, although they will certainly be helpful.

The phones say Lucent not AT&T. I know that doesn't help much. I'll go back tomorrow and see if I can get some info off the cabinet.
The install has to be seen to be believed. No cross connecting, no service hooks. The entire installation (trunks & stations) are all on one single 66 block with wires draped back up to the cabinet.
Can the programming be done from the stations or do I have get programming software for the laptop?
Thanks Tommy.

If its the old classic merlin with sets that say bis 10 or hfai or bis22 etc they need all 4 pairs for all functions and intercom
1st plug a set directly into control unit and see if it works.2 to prove intercom
It does sound like 1 pair of wires is not terminated
The old merlin is straight through so since we dont know what code was used if any make it straight thru ,even if you put a Cat tester on 1 end and move wires on other end to make it straight thru it should work.
Theres so many terminations from the cu to station and room for reversals an end to end test may save you time
CAUTION dont put your cat tester on a powered wire out of the merlin it will kill it.

The system is a Merlin Plus 820D2. The phones are BIS22 and BIS-22D. I got the intercom working but can you tell me how to program station speed dials so you can see when someone is on the phone?
Thanks.

1- slide the t/p button on left side of phone to p towards you. 2-touch button you want to program 3- dial *91 plus intercom # 4- slide t/p button back to middle
I think you can do all the buttons b4 you put the t/p button back to middle.
Other admin functions are done @ x10 thru phone for outside auto dial button on set same as above only *90 plus number

Thanks KENB. That worked great.
Is there a way to set the default line? Right now when they pick up a handset, it reaches for the 4th button down on the left side, which is a CO line. The 5th button down is Intercom and I'd like to make it default there. As it is, if they pick up the phone and hit a speed dial, they end up transferring a dialtone to the person they're calling.
Thanks again.

Thanks. One last request please.
I've been all through this manual and can't seem to make the microphone come on automatically when called on intercom. I tried setting up *70 hands free, but that didn't do anything the system wasn't already doing.
When a station receives and intercom call, the speakerphone answers, but only the speaker, not the microphone. The user still has to manually press "Mic" to speak.
What am I missing?
