I tried a GE digital ans machine on a Spirit phone system in aux port but machine set-up for 4 rings doesn't pick-up. Has 4 phones in system.Have dial tone in phone port on ans machine also tired on a other line DSL/fax it worked.This is 1st line in 5 line hunt group

Plug a standard single line phone into the Aux jack and see if you get dial tone and it rings.
I believe the Aux jack is a power failure transfer for line 1. That means it won't do anything unless the system loses power and then you will only have line 1 on it.
The only way then to connect your answering machine is ahead of the system to whichever line you want, it can only pick up on one line. You can simply use a bridging adapter right on the line jack.

They used to make an adapter for Spirit systems to allow use of single line devices. Do a google search for Spirit ConnecT/R. We used to have one...but got replaced with a Legend.

aux jack should be hot depending on what system you have a 308 line 1, 308/616 line 1 and 4 and on a 1224/2448 aux on top with bottom line jack on a 4 line card when no power to units acts as power failure if a phone is plugged into aux, do as hal says plug a sinlge line phone into the aux , what happens
