I did connections for a friend of mine and fellow installer yesterday. Partner ACS 7.0 and 5 18D Series II phones. 3 of the 5 phones had hookswitch failure. My associate contacted the Avaya supplier and we were informed that this has been a problem with numerous sets. All 5 phones were new.
Anyone else?

Ditto here, never had any of the 34D phones with bad hookswitches, but have had a few of the 18D euros with them. We have gotten in the habit of keeping a few known good ones used and on the shelf for loaners just to cover such "unlucky draws" on installs. The WORST thing I have always noticed about it: It always ends up being the head honcho that gets the bad phone!! Nothing like egg on your face courtesy of Avaya.

Yep, the head honcho goot one.
New info: My associate mentioned to another instaler she is working with on a project out of state. He told her to tell me to use only 8 pin mods on the processor end. According to his past experiances using the 4 pin mods can and will cause damage. He also referred to them as RJ45's and RJ11's. This was my first clue that he wasn't correct. My second clue was if 4 pin mods won't work, why does Avaya supply them in the box with the processor.
I told her to keep a close eye on him.
Is there any possible truth to the 4 pin use causing a problem? :nono:

Believe it or not, 8-pin modular plugs fit the ports on the R7 ACS better than 6p4c's do!

According to his past experiances using the 4 pin mods can and will cause damage.
When used with an 8 pin jack, yes. All the Avaya jacks are 8 position but have only 4 pins, at positions 3,4,5 and 6. 1&2 as well as 7&8 are blank and those would be the ones to suffer damage in a normal 8 pin jack such as 568A or 568B configuration used for data as well as voice by CGs.
The reason Avaya uses 8 position jacks is for backward compatibility with the old Merlin 4 pair wiring. The Merlins were wired 568B (before 568B was even invented) and you could just swap out the system for a Partner by plugging the cables and phones right in, even though they only need 2 pair. You could even use the existing D8W line cords.
8 pin plugs might fit a bit better, but I never noticed the difference or any problems with 6 position plugs. Might have something to do with the quality of the plug you use. I have no experience with the R7, is that ANOTHER bug?
He also referred to them as RJ45's and RJ11's. Hey Ed!

might want to start testing before you go on site . we usually fire up and burn in at least 24 hours before any install
we try to pre program and desi the phones . makes the install quick and painless (well mostly painless)

Yup, we do the same thing. We'll do as much of the programming as possible on the bench and confirm that everything works before it gets to the customer. Sometimes it's just as quick to program the buttons on the phones as I go around plugging them in, unless there are multitudes of DSS buttons or something like that.
Hal, I'll try to throw another star your way.
I think somebody gave me a black hole. It keeps swallowing up all my stars.
