This is really strange but sometimes when a caller calls in, they hear a fax machine sound (not the detection beeps but the high pitch and static sound) when we pick up the phone we hear nothing assuming it's a hang up call.

The problem only happens on 1 line, our main pool line. I was thinking the phone company added a fax machine number to our pool but our phones do ring. It happens from multi EXT's also. No fax machine or modem is connected to the phone system. But we hear nothing on end so couldn't be that anyway.

Any thoughts?

Check to see if your security modem is on line 1. Seen it happen a million times.

Thanks for the reply

Do you mean the Alarm system for the company? Sorry don't have the manual with me right now so couldn't look up to see if this was a phone feature or if you mean the building alarm system.

Calling party couldn't receive call id tones from the customer. The customer might be getting call id tones, but not the calling party ?

Problem occured before we even got caller id. Caller Id has been on the line for less then 2 days and problem has been around for about a month.

Also the Auto Attendent we just put on it and it picks on first ring and still did it. (Had to change from first ring later because caller ID info wasn't being sent yet)

Auto Attendent and Caller ID are both recent changes.

Seems a be odd it would be a modem of any kind

1) It occurs when an office person picks up the phone.

2) We hear nothing on the our end. If it were a modem, we should in thoery hear it also.

3) It's random, random amount of rings and picks up at random times.

Don't get me wrong, i will check out the Alarm system no doubt. But things don't add up right. I also plan on swamping ports tomorrow to see if the problem carries over to the other port or remains.

like DTMF said
points to alarm seizing the line and dialing out , look for both fire and burglar alarms . if it seized the line you would hear nothing

TJ, you're right - I missed that the caller hears it, not kuurus. I would test it by unplugging the line from the system, and using a cord coupler to answer on a butt set or a S/L phone. Also, trace out the line from MPOE to the switch, looking for Alarm connections. Swapping the Lines at the control unit is a good test, to see if the problem moves or stays.
