I am setting up a Merlin Legend R7 R9.0 with Merlin Mail R1. Am using in a home office environment. Have 2 incoming lines (801, 802) and one incoming fax line (803). There are 16 MLX extensions and 1 analogy extension. I want the 801 line to ring through to all extensions (for typical home/personal use) and the 802 line to be set to ring to auto attendant (for business purposes). Want 803 to ring through to fax machine (I have it routed through a Ring Generator Analog card (extension 7116). I also want to be able to dial out on 803 whenever the fax is not otherwise occupied. I currently have set the system to PBX/Hybrid with 3 auto attendants and have set extension 7116 as a fax machine.

Questions:
1.Key or PBX/Hybrid?
2. If set to PBX/Hybrid how do I cause 803 to ring only through to 7116 (I have set up the fax machine as an adjunct with extension of 7116, and line 803 is set to ring through to auto attendant #3. However, when incoming fax comes into 803, it does not autoroute to Ext 7116.
3. If I set up as PBX/Hybrid, can I get the non-office extensions to not ring when a call comes in on 802 (so that I don't interrupt the rest of the household--however, it is OK to ring in on 801)
4. If the answer is PBX/Hybrid, do you have a "cut and paste" set of directions that might make life easy for me to handle the (i) fax issue, the (ii) Line 802 DND concept, and any associated voicemail issues that might result. I am using SPM and do have MLX-20 consoles (both of which work perfectly to program).

Congratulations on the most overkill I have ever seen.

For simplicity sake, run your copper dial tone to the fax [Line in] and from the fax [Extension] to the Legend input.

Program it to appear on any button on the phone so you can use it to call out and you are done.

To save electricity, remove the analog card, you don't need it.

This is it, happy home businessing.

Sounds like a good idea! Is there a way though that I can get that pass-through fax line (803) to appear on the various phones but not to ring on those phones. (The system is set to Key now since I have not been able to figure out how to have line 1 (801) ring on all extensions and line 2 (802) ring into the automated attendant in PBX/Hybrid mode). Most of the commentary I read suggests that I should go with PBX/Hybrid but the above question still lingers in my mind. Relating to the fax machine, I can set the fax machine to pick up after 1 ring, but still the first ring is annoying on those other lines (when they are plugged into the output side of the fax machine as I just discovered). I was kind of hoping that I could send the fax line copper into AutoA #3 that then would shuttle the call to the fax directly (extension 7116). Since I will have some other analog extensions, I will probably still want to keep that analogy card installed.

Why would you go hybrid for such a tiny installation? For something that small, I would think that "key" would be a much better option.

There are 20 extensions and we want to have automated attendant with voice mail work on line 2 (802).

I can't understand why you would use a Legend for what you are doing. 2 lines x 20 extensions is tiny for a Legend, way overkill. Somebody give this to you cheap?

Another aspect to consider is that the the Legend is not an easy system to work with even for pros. There is a steep learning curve and you won't get all what you need from the manuals. Obviously you are confused already and we won't be able to help you beyond some of the basics found in the user documentation.

For what you are doing you really should consider selling that thing and getting something more suitable like a Partner that will do everything you want far easier and cheaper.

Must agree with overkill as previously described. Only reason I can think of that you would want this system in your house is to learn it and move it into a business location sometime in the future.

Is this the case?

How about a different perspective?

You've got the control unit, you've got the phones, the wiring isn't any different than for a Partner, why not do it?

Put it in Hybrid/PBX, but then take the lines out of the default pool, and reassign them as "private" lines to the phones. Now it appears like a Key system, but you've got access to a lot of Legend features that require you to be in PBX mode.

You can set auto line select, and ringing for individual lines at extensions, just like a Partner, the Merlin Mail is very much like Partner Mail, so I'd say "go for it"

Key mode and change you dial plan to 2 digits....
The 3 lines will appear on all the stations. Program line 803
to a s/l port and connect your fax to this
station. line 802..assign a phamton station with
your business greeting and the principal user feature. forget using the AA in the VM...not needed. Now you have the use of all 3 lines and
will preserve there functionality.
this should work for you...I have the same setup
in my house...and no..its not overkill...
cdouglass...if you need more help with your
programming PM me
