We have a Partner Mail VS R4 system at my office and today it lost power for about 30 seconds. When it did come back on is seems to have lost all of its settings. As soon as it was on all the phones rang when a call came in and it rang on all lines, all sorts of crazy stuff. Right now I think I have that somewhat tamed, and can work with it more in the future.

Two things that puzzle me:
1) When a call comes in it appears on two lines. One you can press to answer, the other gives you a dial tone. If you are the caller and you hang up before it’s answered, the dial tone line light stops blinking but the actual line it came in on rings a few more times before it stops.
2) when a call comes in the system plays a “transferring to receptionist” message then does so before playing the menu prompt. The manual’s only suggestion to make sure the VMS extensions are assigned to Hunt Group 7. (exts 32,33) They are and I still get no menu prompts. I also read the systems can be without power for 4(?) days before loosing their settings. Did it loose them anyway?

If it helps in anyway here’s a pic of the system .

I apologize in advance, I’ve never messed with a phone system, I did a ton of manual reading today, but I’m still kind of ignorant on the subject. I’d appreciate any support/suggestions.

hi

welcome to the forum ,

you need a new mem battery in the processor , its soldered in and not user replaceable

then the whole system will need to be reprogrammed to see the voice mail

my suggestion would be to call your vendor

if your in the market for a new vendor check the installer link at the top of the page for one in your area

You have a Partner II system with a Partner Mail VS R4.

What has happened is the Partner II processor has lost it's programming due to the loss of power. This is because its old and the memory backup no longer is functional.

So, you will have to reprogram from scratch. That's only an interim solution however because as soon as power is lost again the programming will be lost and you will be back in the same boat.

I think this would be a good time to upgrade to a new ACS R6 processor. I would suggest that you contact a local Avaya Business Partner who will be able to provide this as well as the necessary programming together with a 3 year warranty and support.

Thanks for your replies.

After telling some coworkers about the battery situation, and it being something that’s soldered in, I now have two EEs here that are chomping at the bit to replace that battery. Obviously I’m can’t ask you to comment on their technical abilities’ to get the job done, but I’m wondering if this is even something I shouldn’t even let them touch. Is this a special battery of some sort or is it something he could pull out, run to Batteries Plus and get a replacement for? Is it special order or something that only a Lucent tech could provide?

The battery would be a special order.

At this stage of the game, the processor is so old, Hal's suggestion to upgrade to a Partner ACS (R6) is your best bet.

The old processor isn't worth the effort. smile

1- If your engineers mess this up you have no phone system until you get a replacement processor.

2- Guess who gets blamed ?[ Hint look in the mirror].

3- With Hals suggestion you pick up capability for 3 more phone lines and 8 extensions and memory batteries that are AAA found in every drug store.

I've done it many times but that was way back many years ago before the Partner II was obsolete. It was also on the bench to a processor that was exchanged for a working one.

Believe me its not worth the trouble. 6 months after its fixed the power supply or something else will go, those things are old.

If you are going to go through the trouble of pulling the module and reprogramming do yourself a favor and replace it. Do it now or suffer later.

The battery was replaced last night but it seems that the system isn’t remembering settings for very long, or, I’m somehow overwriting or setting up conflicting settings.

I’m looking into the newer R7 system. I do have some questions about it but I started a new post here for that topic.

I’m amazed at the amount and speed of the replies on this forum. Thanks again for the pointers.

The R6 is what you want and if you don't believe me just remember I told you so about that Partner II.
