I got a new laptop and after installing WinSPM I'm having a problem. First, I did install all the old versions and patched and so on and so forth to bring me up to 9.0. I can directly connect with no problem at all. The problem is when I try assisted I get an error "cannot locate TAPI device". If I go through the steps and hit connect before I call them, I get dial tone, disconnect, no carrier just as I should. Then I call them and everything works fine. Has anyone ever experienced anything like this?

I'll get that message every once in a blue moon when my connection pukes or after I terminate WinSPM in an ugly way. All it means is that WinSPM lost it's way and can no longer see your modem.
WinSPM 9.0 is still old software. With that in mind, remember that Microsoft's ever-patched OS threatens WinSPM's stability as well as these laptop "softmodems"--which really drive me crazy. No one seems to know how to make a modem anymore.
Just for fun, start WinSPM and choose Settings > Configure TAPI, and roll through the setup again.
I'm unsure what "then I call them and everything works fine" means. It's a confusing statement to follow (1) a call attempt with an error message then (2) a call attempt that gets dialtone then disconnects "just as it should".

I've heard that XP is really the last OS that WinSPM will work properly with. Is that true or can WinSPM be used with Vista?

I beleive when MerlinMan was on Tek-Tips, he tried it to no avail. but that is the only time I had heard anyone even try it.
Another solution I have been using. Making the network guys give me remote admin to a pc running SPM.

I located Merlinman's old post about Vista & WinSPM. Then I remembered that was how I found out about the incompatibility.
A "mature" mind is so overrated.

Jack had it working with the "Business" version of Vista; it was "Ultimate" (beta version) that was giving him problems. I did a separate post at https://www.tek-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=1356057 that announced success with the QA--or public--release of "Ultimate". I also outlined the system that I used to test with. As far as I know, three flavors of Windows Vista are untested against WinSPM (the results haven't been posted anyway). These versions are known as Home Premium, Home Basic and Enterprise. It seems crazy that WinSPM would be a problem; it's emulation software talking to a serial port, and it doesn't get much simpler than that.
