1. How many pairs does the Avaya 18D phone need to connect it to a Partner system. I thought I read somewhere that the 18D phone needs two pairs, but I'm pretty sure I've seen them working on just one pair.

2. Can the Avaya 18D phone work as a single line phone on a plain old telephone line?

Is pair one just a POTS line to pass dial-tone through the phone and out the AUX jack ?

What would happen if you just connected pair one?

What would happen if you just connected pair two?

The voice is on pair 1, the data on pair 2.

If you just connect the 2nd pair, the light work but you get no voice. Because the 18D needs the data to operate, if you connect the first pair you get nothing, but if you connect a single line set, you get dial tone.

Sounds like you need to do some experimenting and see for yourself. This way you will know how to diagnose Partner wiring problems with a butt set and by the way the phone behaves.

Extra credit: what happens if you bridge two system phones (both pairs as with a bridging adapter) on the same extension? wink

So what happens Hal, when you bridge 2 system phones? I didnt want to risk trying it for fear of burnin' up the port!

Is that what happens? blown port?

You won't blow the port, but neither phone will work. The display's backlight will come on, but there will be no display.

Thanks Tommy. Actually I find that the display will still work but everything else will stop working on the first phone when the second phone is plugged in. The second phone will have the display lit but no data and nothing will work.

You would be surprised how many times more than one jack is wired to the same extension. It's usually requested by a customer so that a phone can be moved but invariably two phones get plugged in at the same time. So don't do it.
