We have the Merlin Legend v6.25 with several users with MLX phones that cover for the front desk. Sometimes they receive calls that they would like to send to their own voice mail. However the system does not allow this.

Have you tried delayed Secondary Coverage buttons?

You don't tell us which voice mail you are using.
Make a phantom extension number that is answered by the Auto Attendant. Do this by renumbering an adjunct, covering it to voice mail, and making a mailbox that either has a class of service that directs it to the AA or simply assign the AA to the mailbox.
Now you transfer the caller to the phantom extension number, but don't hang up yet. When you hear the recording, dial your own extension number, and when it transfers back to you, hang up or press transfer again. Ignore the new call coming to your extension, OR, press DND at the beginning of this whole sequence.

Would programming a DVM (direct voicemail)button in the MLX set programming work?

No, Legend / Magix does not allow you to do a DVM to the extension you are on, unlike Partner.
That's why I suggest the senario of transferring to the AA and back to the extension.
