Config is 1st Cabinet. 4 412 TDLs 1 016 ETR 2nd Cabinet Messaging, 800 ICLID. Customer reported trouble is... when talking to someone on the outside, the outside party hears static. The person on the inside hears a clear connection. System is in Key Mode. BOC tests OK. I was able to recreate the trouble by calling into my voice mail a bunch of times. The message I left was that I was calling from xxx-xxxx. As I was leaving the message, it sounded fine. however when I retrieved the message, I could hear really bad static some of the time. I knew what trunk number from leaving the number on the message. Whenever I hit trunk 802, 814 or 817, I heard the static. Next I tried to call a live person on these trunks, the problem went away. I tried doing the voice mail thing again but now I can't recreate the problem. Grrrrr! When I was able to recreate the trouble, it seemed the phones were pretty busy. But I don't know if that's significant or not. Any Idears Anyone?

Clipping and "static" are often a sign of the Merlin Messaging hard disc going south. If your MerMsg is a R1.0-R2.5, then there is also the possibility that a chipset is noisy/bad.

I would do some test calls on the lines before the Magix with your butt set. This would say for sure if the trouble in with the system or with the service provider.

Mike pointed out that I might need to look at your question a little furter.
In doing so, it appears that you are testing the call quality by reaching your own VMS in order to get an example of what the remote party might hear. Am I right? If so, I'd say that's a pretty good test.
Mike's suggestion makes a lot of sense. Jump on the POTS line directly and place test calls from there before concluding that any of your own hardware is at fault. Sorry about posting such a hasty response.

Background...
One thing I didn't mention. When I call my mailbox I can press 1 and bypass my greeting. I started noticing that sometimes when I pressed 1, my greeting continued. I later determined that on the calls where my greeting kept playing, that these were the calls that had the static. Now I'm starting to think I have a TTR problem, and the static is somehow tied to this. Also in the past I've had 016 ETR modules that have had a severe effect on systems. So much so that the ETR Module brought down a whole 3 cabinet Magix. So now I'm starting to convince myself that the 016 ETR has 1 or more bad TTRs and this is also causing sporadic squealing on outgoing calls. I was going to do a system reset anyway so I figured while the system was down, I would just go ahead and swap out the ETR.
This fixed absolutely nothing.
Getting to the bottom of things....
It wasn't a bad TTR that stopped me from bypassing my greeting. It was the static, that prevented my Audix from "hearing" the tones.
I finally did as Mike suggested and placed calls right off the dmarc. After about the 3rd call, I couldn't bypass my greeting. When I checked my message, there was static, and I was X-static!!! I tried another line and again was able to recreate the problem.
At least now I knew I could rule out the Magix.
This was a real head-scratcher for a couple of reasons. While I was testing I wanted a colleague in another town to hear the static. I could NEVER recreate it when I called him.
This is my theory thus far...
When calls are going out on these lines, they don't always route the same way. Sometimes they hit a staticy path. And when calling a different town (but still a local call) it routes completely different, bypassing the staticy path.
I have a feeling this is going to take a vendor meet to convince Verizon, but at least I'll be able to recreate the problem.
:p

Well it took 2 days but I think I convinced the Verizon guy the problem is not part of the Magix. Unfortunately, he has NO clue on how to fix the problem.
