The receptionist reported yesterday that on a few occasions she will see a line or several lines in use, it will be blinking on her station and when she picks it up she hears a fast busy tone. Not sure where to start here, the Telco or the switch. I was called in last night to fix a dead phone which had a short in the cable for the signal pair. Could they be related?

Do the lines in question appear on other phones.
If not, then the console membrane may be going
bad. just a thought.

I would start by posting the type of switch and software release.

Then trouble shoot the obvious. Disconnect from the KSU/PBX. If you can duplicate the problem while onsite, run over to the D-mark w/ your test set and see if the line is actually in use. I would even go as far as having a second phone side by side with the troubled lines assigned to keys and see if it happens on both sets.

Partner ACS R7, release 91O. The receptionist did say one other phone they know of showed the line lights blinking at the time. Being on site all day is not feasible.

If it's flashing then I would think the line is on hold.
Is someone going off hook on a CO line and then pressing a DSS key or intercom to make an intercom call and the CO line may be put on hold automatically? I would set all sets to go off hook on intercom.
They can dial 9 or press a CO key to dial out.
Is there voicemail on the system?

I had a ACS R.7 do the very same thing a few months back.
My problem turned out to be high loop current on the CO lines from the telco. And it screwed up the CO line ports on the ACS.

Is this case we where lucky, we called the telco and they got the loop current back down in the 21ma range.

Problem solved. It was the shorted signal pair. I moved the extension to a different one last night just to see if it had an effect and when I got in today they said that extension was ringing back to the receptionist. Found the short and all is OK now. One shorted extension can really mess with an ACS apparently.

Sure it will, the short will keep putting calls on hold.
Glad you got it figured out.
