So i have this branch that they are needing to add another MLX phone but all the MLX ports are taken. They have a completely open 408 board and i was wondering if i could just swap out a 408 MLX board i have, and if I did would it require any kind of programming to make it work w/ the MLX phones.

If it is the LAST board in the system, fine, remove it, board renumber, put in the MLX, and board renumber again.

If that 408-ATL board is somewhere in the middle of the system, do not remove it, and do not swap it for any other kind of board. It will totally hose the programming on every extension downstream of the board. Add the MLX card at the end of everything else, even if it means you need to add an expansion cabinet and power supply

Smart thing to do is....get yourself a r7 processor
and on your test bench merlin system...reprogram
the system from scratch and include your new MLX
board where you want it...this way your not messing
with the original programming...yes, its more labor
on your part..your cutting down the time the system
is down while you make your changes.

No one has yet to ask what hardware you have in total.

Do you have any empty slots?

If so, you will be better off using one for your new MLX Board.

If not, you must be very careful about replacing the 408 with an MLX type board for this reason:

The 408 has only 8 Extension ports, PHYSICAL and LOGICAL, the MLX has a LOGICAL PORT for each PHYSICAL port.

In other words, you could really mess up any EXTENSION programming you have to the RIGHT of the 408 Board if you swap it for an MLX.

Also, if the MLX Board has no LINE PORTS, you could foul up the programming for any lines to the right of it as well.

MM has just re-enforced my point about doing this
type of major reprogramming on the "in system processor"...I don't understand WHY in this forum
the guru's don't endorse the idea of doing any
major system changes on a backup processor. As I have stated...this keeps you from screwing up the
orginal system translations and allowing to program
any card addition or change without fear of the
system being OOS. This keeps you out of trouble.

You are fine as long as you swap a 408MLX into a 408 ATL module slot. The 408 cards change be interchanged without changing the numbering plan. You do have to do a board renumber, and the one caveat is if you are using any of the downstream adjunct numbers for anything. Unlikely, but if you are, then that could be an issue. At minimum, perform both a back up to a laptop and backup to the PC card before making any changes.
