New laptop with Windows 7. Loaded SPM8 and does not look like it will work. 64bit proc. Should I just load onto older PC/Laptop with XP or is there a fix for 7? Not going to do the virtual XP on the same machine as a solution.

I would suggest just running it in compatibility mode for XP on your Windows 7 Machine.
It works for me.
Also, if you have SPM8, why not bump it to SPM-9?

I ended up making a dual boot laptop that will boot into either Win7 or XP. Create a small partition on your laptop, say 200 MB, and then boot from you XP installation disk, follow the prompts to install XP on the unused partition. Then you can run SPM and any other app that doesnt like to work with 64 bit Win 7.

It could be the USB to Serial adapter at this point. We use the USA-19HS Keyspan and haven't found anything yet that it won't talk to.

Yes, King Microsoft had this great idea - DO AWAY WITH REAL SERIAL PORTS, and let them eat USB Cake.
I too must use the USB to SERIAL Adapter. But bear in mind, they are somewhat fickle.
Every so often, if I have a GLITCH or something with my nice new DELL, I have to remove it, re-install it, and MAKE it go back to being Com 1.
I suppose one could find a PCI Board that has a SERIAL INTERFACE on it, but I can live with my current arrangement.
It does work, it's just a pain now and then.
Just an FYI
