On a 9 pin serial cable you only need pins 2-5, with 2 and 3 reversed at 1 end, and the others straight through.
I usually use a db9 female to rj45 female connector which lets me put the pins in whatever config I want, then put a cat 5 in between so I can have whatever length I need.
