Ran into an enigma today...

A customer had us reconfigure and move an SX200 EL for them. When we went to start cross-connecting, we discovered that the pinouts weren't right. When we shorted the pair on the 1-7-1 plid (ONS)(bk/br pair), it lit at 1-8-1 plid (wh/bl) instead of 1-7-1.

We verified the cable by testing pair by pair. The cable was correct, and was firmly connected to the J4 connector. We had the same problem with the J3 cable.

We finally concluded that it was a bad cabinet/backplane, and exchanged it with a used stock spare from our warehouse. Customer approved the swap. Tested good. Problem solved.

So we cut the switch, and it came up perfectly, standard sweet-and-beautiful Mitel cutover. Except for one superset 4025 at the front desk. I had this phone programmed on plid 1-1-8. It showed "waiting for sync."

As you know, this usually means "port not programmed." I traced the cables hand-over-hand,
toned from IDF to IDF, tested all cables and cross-connects. I finally connected the 4025 at the MDF. Same problem.

Okay, sounds like a bad port.

So I program 1-1-12 as a replacement port. I turn back to the MDF... And my 4025 has come up! So I put it back at front desk, and it works... Except... it's the phone that I just programmed on 1-1-12, not the one I had originally programmed at 1-1-8.

Verified wiring AGAIN: 1-1-8 is Vi/Bl, 1-1-12 is Vi/Sl. Not a miswire.

Problem has got to be in the backplane, or the cabinet. Again! On two seperate cabinets!

And every other port is perfectly fine. Even all the other supersets on that same card...

I've worked around it, but has anyone seen this before? Any thoughts? War stories? Am I going mad?
