hello out there techs, i think i might need a
little advice on this one.
i have a govt. project and the specs on the cable
and fiber runs is about 9 kazillion pages, and it
states that all work must be performed in accordan
ce with kazillions of published standards and i
would like some help as to where i would find all
of this information.
the list starts with underwriters labs, then goes
to ANSI/TIA/EIA,,DOCUMENTS, BICSI-TDMM, NEC,MFPA,
NEMA ETC, ETC, AND ON AND ON AND ON,. At the end
it requires a Certified level 111 cable tester,
with the model of certification and a garuntee
that the cat-6 cable (plenum) will be good for
25 years.. the building is just 100 ft by 100ft
its not the white house, what if any sites or
govt spec shops would be appriciated.
p.s. think i might overbid this one.

My company is in the Washington, DC area and we are used to those specifications and bid packages. It's mostly a formality as in recycled bid specs (cut and paste). The last time that I actually played along with their requirements (a consultant was hired to supervise), I relied on my supplier to do much of the legwork and they did it.

The supplier did it very well, to include getting us a temporary CAT6 certification for the job until we could do the real classes.

If you would like to PM or e-mail me, I will give you their name and contact information. Don't forget that you can rent testing equipment.

Most cable and Jack manufacturers have teamed up, So that if you take their course and use their products, a 15 to 25 yr. Guar. will be issued. We needed to use our Supplier for Cert. and rented tester also.

Same here
We received certs from Molex by attending local courses through them . We received fiber certs by local courses offered through Graybar . 2 of our tech's went the extra mile on their on time and got their BISCI Cert . But that's more of a resume thing than practical application , we already know there is a right and a wrong way to run&terminate cable . Certifying the cabling gives the IT people the "warm fuzzies" so humor them . My 2 cents . smile

Oh by the way , Government sites are a good source for AMC revenue . About every 3 months they play "pop goes the weasel" over the PA and everyone takes a new seat/cubicle !

The BICSI Telecommunications Distribution Methods Manual is very good reference. Good for keeping up with all new standards. After looking at first Gov. bid sheet, I decided i needed better info and purchased manuals for office.

The cable may be good for 25 years but will there be computers as we know them? Pretty funny actually.

I remember first ARC-net cable we installed for customer in late 70's. Have completely rewired same place twice since then. They are looking into fiber to desk now. Change is good for us if only we can stay ahead of learning curve. Its no longer a curve for me its way around the bend.
