Hello,

I have a telephony background but mainly with Inter-Tel. A new job has forced me to learn some Nortel. I need to make an extension move in an office. Basically move one extension to another location in the office.

Without any knowledge of Nortel can I assume that I can tone out the extension and punch it down to the person's new jack number (location). I should have no need to get into the programming system, correct?

Thank You,

Troy

if the system has set relocation enabled you can simply move the telephone, this feature has been a headache and a help in some past situations for me!

welcome

The preferred method is to move jumpers, but as stated above there is a set relocation feature on all Norstar systems.

Thanks for the posts. Very helpful. Set relocation feature? Can I ask how that works? Sounds like a programming feature in which the phone retains it's extension info when moved? Am I somewhat correct smile I take it to enable it, you need to get into the programming (brain) of the system to enable it.

Thank You,

Troy

That is correct and it is enabled globally for the entire system not on a phone by phone basis.

By default it is set to YES, but most installers set it to NO, as it does cause headaches later on.

You will also need the appropriate p/w to verify +/or change the setting.

Move the jumper, dont use set relocation. It will cause many troubles for the next guy to work on the system. Customers will move the sets on there own and casue a real cluster !$!@#$#@$.

agreed on the set relocation, its handy on smaller systems but one of my customers has a campus where phones bite the dust after lightning and sometimes you end up with the recption extension ringing at the loading dock!

Just had to deal with today for a system that had lost power over the w/e. Their UPS failed as did the Caps in the system. Over 50 extensions that defaulted as because some SOB had left that on when originally set up so I had to move the jumpers around to match their original extensions. 4 hours of income for me / expense for the client as their business cards had the extension numbers on them.

This is a huge manufacturing plant so I got my weeks worth of exercise today.

Move the jumpers and help out the client.

Dave
