I am trying to figure out how to reset the password on this system. It got changed somehow and no one knows what it is.

If you're talking about the Installer password, then we are not permitted to post those instructions here for security purposes. Sorry.
I suggest calling in a qualified Nortel tech for this. Shouldn't cost that much.

Well, there is ONE way: take a piece of paper and a pen, backup the programming on your paper, reset the system and reprogram. You cannot "crack" the password on these old systems, so stop looking and call in someone.
If you hire a good tech, shouldn't be much more than 5-10 minutes to program entire system (unless you have speed dials) plus maybe 1-2 minutes per phone. Should be a regular service call.

on that same vein, ive never dealt much with these old systems but when i try access admin and config functions i dont need to enter a password is that because its a dr1

The OP obviously has at least a DR5 as there is a password. The system cannot be "reset" without knowing the current password, without the proper skills that a trained Nortel tech has to perform this function.
