I have a customer that is having some trouble with his pref line out. When he picks up the handset to go off hook the display says "Not Valid". Now his phone is pref line out to intercom, if I change it to pref line to "idle" then it will grab an outside line fine. He only gets the "Not Valid" error when his pref line is intercom. I am by no means a Panasonic tech and have limited experience with the system. If there are questions I will do my best to gather the information for you. Thanks for any help.

ok the pref line out part of the system simply put is ....what you want the phone to do when you lift the handset.

in most cases this is set to intercom
reason when you lift the handset you would most likly want to ring somone inside the building if it is your customers intent to use the handset as a hotline then your fault may be that the handset is set with a no: programed into it.
to explain lets say your cus has a phone set to ring an outside no when lifted.this no may be 9-045 898611
in the above the system dials 9 first (give me an outside line)
if you have pref line set to line them the no being dialed is really 99-045 898611
if your cus doesnt have a line no: set in pref line out and if the system is set to intercom then the handset when lifted is looking for an ext with the no: 9-045898611 which it cant have thus the display "Not Valid" ...
so in short if you want to get a outside line when you lift the handset you must tell the system which line or group of lines to pull.
things that would help us to help you ...

1. what is the model of the phone system ver also if known or age.
2.what does the customer whant to happen when he lifts the handset.
3. when the customer dials 9 or 0 to get a outside lin(dependnt on where you are (does he get one.

Thank you for the quick response. The customer simply wants to have Intercom dial tone when he lifts the handset. They do not want a hot line. Right now the customer can dial a 9 and get an outside line. The phone system is a kxt1232, I do not know the version. I have walked the customer through the programming for pref line out and still have the same "not valid" in the display when programmed for intercom dial tone. When pref line out is programmed for an outside CO line then it works as it should and grabs CO dial tone. The problem only happens when pref line out is programmed for intercom. Thank you for all your assistance.

Is this on all sets or just a few?
you say if he dials 9 you get an outside line.
That's telling us your on the intercom.
It sounds like someone may have set the pick-up dialing or "hot line" and it's calling an invalid ext.
If this is the case you can press the speaker button or pick up the handset and immediately dial 740.
Try this and let us know.
Thanks, MrG

The problem only existed on one phone, but due to this forums outstanding members the customer is now working properly. The customer had apparently dialed 741 at some point and activated the 'hot line' feature. As soon as I instructed him to dial 740 he was back to working properly. Thank you all for your assistance.
