I have a customer who likes the AA features of the voice mail. However, she wants the caller to hear "greetings, if you know your party's extension, dial it now, or wait for a receptionist". After a respectable amount of time, with no buttons pressed, she wants it forwarded to an external answering service. Then the operator at the answering service would determine who the caller needed to speak to, and then forward the call back into the system. My question is this: at this point in time, how many of the business's lines are they tying up doing it this way? I initially thought three, but now I am having second thoughts. Would it depend on how the transfer to the answering service was done in the first place? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

set up a mailbox in the following way and put that mailbox in your done chain on your main greeting
Forwarding a Caller Off Site
Using Centrex Transfer
The token string replaces the extension number in the mailbox, which performs the transfer.
Token string for the Stratagy mailbox on a CTX system: @-#450,phone number--H
Token String for the Stratagy mailbox on a Strata DK: @F-#45-phone number--H
Token definitions:
@ Suppress normal mailbox function
F Hook Flash Puts the caller on hold and draws system dial tone
- Pause for ½ second
#45 Performs a flash on the trunk
, Pause for 2 seconds. This waits for the Centrex provider to give steady dial tone.
<phone number> The telephone number as dialed from the local site. (Centrex may require a 9 and a pause before the number)
- Pause ½ second
- Pause ½ second
H Hang up Voice mail releases the port
Note: The pauses after the phone number may need to be replaced by commas depending upon the Centrex provider
In the mailbox DND must be off
In the phone system the following programs should be verified/modified as needed
12 Code 4 Data should be 1 for a ½ second flash on the trunk
Troubleshooting:
1 Verify that the phone number can be dialed from the phone system
2 Verify that the number can be dialed from the voice mail port (not possible with the Stratagy DK system)
3 Verify that you can flash on the trunk and receive Centrex dial tone from the voice mail port (or another single line port when working with the Stratagy DK)
4 Verify that you can manually perform a Centrex transfer from a single line port.
5 When possible monitor the port (in the case of a Stratagy DK this is not possible.. Adjust pauses as required.
To add a greeting after the @ insert P(G1) followed by the F-#45. This will play greeting one of the mailbox you are using to transfer.

Well folks, I know how to program a Toshiba VM machine. What my question was how many lines would it take in my original scenario?

If you are using Centrex transfer, it's 1 line. For a trunk-to-trunk transfer, it's 2 lines.

Sending the call back to the CTX would require a 3rd line, and if they leave a message and back out to AA, then back to the Answering service, there's a 4th line, and a 5th to get sent back to system again...
