I am looking to get a new cellphone this summer (21st birthday present). I wouldn't mind upgrading to a Palm or Blackberry. Thoughts?

I have a thought... how about installing one of those T/R to GSM boards into an old Western Electric butt set! You'd have to do something about a ringer, I don't think they had them built in.

Jeff -
I've got a Palm Treo 700P from Verizon. I don't use it for email or texting or web browsing - just phone, palm applications and music.
I like it a lot. It combines the three functions I used extensively in one footprint. It's a good phone with a fine speakerphone, it does Palm perfectly and it does music up to the 2GB max of my card. I'd prefer an Ipod for the music - I like the interface better. But for phone and palm stuff it's excellent. It also comes with "Documents to go" which allows me to open, edit & create word & excel docs on the road.
I'm married to Palm - I've been using one for 12 years, so a Blackberry wasn't an option for me. I hear they're OK.

I've used a Palm on and off since 2000 and I think it's a great device, at least it was, I have almost no experience with the newer ones. However I can't really see the benefit of having one integrated with a cell phone, or maybe I'm just showing my old age (24... haha).
Meanwhile, my StarTAC I've had since I was 18 still works fine.

I have a Blackberry and also have had a Pocket PC 6700 between the two the PPC was by far the better but both have different advantages. Blackberry is finally coming around to apps like Word & Excel and are available now through 3rd party software. My choice today would be the "Tilt"

I find it hard to get excited about any new(ish) cellular phones, as I'm not keen on the design of any of them. In fact, I totally resisted ever getting one for myself until about 3 years ago, and it only gets used rarely.
That said, it's a Nokia 3310, which works well enough on the Vodafone network in my area (GSM 900MHz).

To me the integration of the Palm with the cell is just one less thing to carry. And if you add in the music, it's two less things to carry.

I don't use a PDA anymore and I've never had, nor will I probably ever have an iPod or any other MP3 player.
I hate iPods, I live in NYC and everywhere you look is drones walking around or sitting on the train plugged into the damn iPods totally oblivious and cut off to their surroundings. Often they are fervently text messaging on their silly Sidekick "phones".
