To review: We have Program 32-Automatic Preference set to select the lowest open CO line when going off-hook. In most cases, everyone gets predictable behavior: the phone rings, they pick up and answer -- or to make a call, they simply pick up and dial.

But when a call has been put on hold from any extension, going off-hook on any system phone selects Intercom with a broken intercom dial tone (about 2 pulses/sec). We have to press an open line button to get outside dial tone.

We would like our usual off-hook behavior to apply even when a call is on hold.

Our first solution was to set up Prog 16 with the lines in the dial-81 line group, then in Prog 32 set the off-hook auto-preference to the dial-81 group. But this auto-selects the highest available line, which on a long phone call causes problems with fax reception and credit card processing. And our outgoing call volume is high enough that we didn't want to remove the fax/credit card line from the line group.

Does anyone know why in our initial setup (Prog 34 set to 102, lowest CO line) going off-hook gets Intercom tone (a split-ring version) when a call is on hold?

LCR looks like it would allow fine-grained outgoing line selection control. But it would require dialing 9 before every call, right?

Any other ideas?

I would assume that it does this if the first CO is busy?

It may be easier to just not include the fax line in the 1st CO group.

I suppose you could also reverse to order they are plugged to the system. Say Line 1 goes to CO 4, 2 to 3, 3 to 2 and 4 to 1. That would reverse the order they are picked. Still using CO group 1

Or just make them dial 9. In the end it would be a lot cleaner.
