It sounds as if the battery on the CPU has finally quit holding a charge---and the system goes back to default. Or the CPU is going bad. Or....?? At any rate, you now have a nice project on your hands, young Jedi.
You can take the system apart, find the battery, and get a new one, and replace. Being that old of a system, I'm guessing that you may have to desolder the old one, and solder the new one.
Do you have the manual?? Have you done any soldering of circuit boards before?? Do you have a desoldering gun??
It may be, that old father time has forced your customer to make a decision. No one wants to upgrade. No one ever wants to get a new system. But if that battery is shot---nothing else, except a new battery, can take its place. If the CPU is shot, nothing but another CPU can take ITs place.
What happens when you reboot?? Is that when the op!op!op! happens?? May have to look at some refurbed KSUs, maybe. Is that 1224 a flat pack --or does it have cards?? Good Luck.

This was a problem SWBell faced with the Landmark. We never found a fix for the problem and neither did SWBell, between this problem and the Voicemail I think this is what put them out of the key system business. Its not just a battery problem, it doesnt take a power failure to cause this, it will just loose all or some programming, as a SWBell dealer we sent plenty of these back for repair only to get them back and a few weeks later the same thing was happening again. The one thing we did have luck with was to put a huge BBU in front of the system. Like a 1500 or 2000 APC and nothing else but the system in it. But that didnt work at all locations.

SSPhone: If that's the case, then Y.E.T. should jump with both feet on that. Price is right!! And it's a simple, quick solution.

Yea I believe it's not a power fail issue. It usually does lose all programming but sometimes saves the date... Monday we are installing an avaya demo for them!! Thanks all
