I've been racking my brain trying to get this sucker to work. I got the 90VAC neon lamp so it is supposed to light up when the phone line rings, but it does nothing. I've got a 47 uF capacitor bridging the tip like I was told to do, and still nothing.
Any hints?

There's really not much more to it, Jeff. Either the capacitor or the neon lamp is bad. Try eliminating the capacitor from the circuit and see what happens.
By the way, when you refer to "bridging the tip", I assume that you just have the capacitor in series with the lamp. If it is truly bridged across tip and ring, then that may be your problem.
Tip should hit one end of the capacitor, the other end of the capacitor should hit one side of the lamp and ring should hit the other side of the lamp (a true series circuit between the components). Is that what you have?

I took 2 pieces of jumper wire with a mod plug on each end. Connected the rings together. Connected one tip to one screw, one tip to the other screw. Put the cap across the two tip screws. I got bupkes (nothing). One mod plug goes to the wall, the other goes to my phone.
I had to solder some pieces of wire to the capacitor because the leads were tiny, is it possible I damaged it?
I'm gonna order some more lamps.

It sounds like you have the cap in series with the phone. Do as Ed said and connect one end of cap to one end of neon then connect other cap lead to tip and neon lead to ring.

OK, I rewired it like you said, but I'm gonna have to order some more lamps...now I can't find the extra I had!

Can't say that I've ever seen an NE-1 - do you know what the difference is? Maybe breakdown voltage?
