NE-1 ? NE-2 was/is a neon lamp about 1/2 inch long, 1/4 inch diameter. Baseless with wire leads. Works on 70-80 VDC and up. Works on 65rms (?) VAC, 110VAC line voltage. Use 100,00K 1/2 watt resistor in series to prevent excess current blowing it up!

iF YOU REMOVE THE SLIDE-BASE PARTS WITHOUT BREAKING THE BULB. YOU'LL PROBABLY BE HOLDING AN NE-2. (Sorry about the caps lock  ) Be careful not to cut yourself!

Use the ringing supply or even the wall outlet to test the lamp. (Be careful of shocks). It will work without the cap.
Before the divestiture/registration era, WE beehives did not have a cap. Only when they were required to comply with Part 68 did they start to be issued with a cap so that they would present a "standard termination" to a test desk or MLT system. ISTR that they had a 0.5B REN.
When the originals were in use, and the line was being tested with a 72- or 96-volt test desk circuit, the lamp would start to glow dimly once it ionized, and give a false reading (short circuit). After they were equipped with caps, that symptom was not an issue anymore.

On the issue of testing the lamps from the testboard. If you used the 24ma key you didn't fire the lamp. we used them here for poolside ringing indicators

Got the lamps just now, put one in and voila, it works! It's a bit dim but now I'm happy
