Does anyone know what equipment and software I would need to be able to access the DSU with a laptop and make changes. I'm also looking to add voice mail if anyone had any suggestions on that as well.

yOU CAN USE PROCOM PLUS OR PC ANYWHERE TO CONNECT THROUGH THE SERIAL PORTS OF THE DSU AS WELL AS THE DSUII.
Let me know what you need in reference to voice mail. I do a lot of Comdial work.

You can also use hyperterminal to access the telephone system.

The only open ports I see are Data Port A and B. Do I just run a phone line from the laptop to Port A? Also, what commands would I use to do what? I can do computers but this is my first time messing with a phone system. Thanx for the help.

Your assumption is correct regarding the data port and running a standard line cord over to the key service unit. You will need a password for the key service unit in order to connect. By the way, the baud rate should be set to 9600, 8 data bits and 1 stop bit.

Ok, so after I get the password (which I will probably have to get from the company that installed it) what do I do to connect? Is there a # I have to dial from hyperterm? After I get in is there a menu that you can go through or do I have to know specific commands? Are there any sites or books that could help me learn a little more about the system? Thanx for the help Larry, I really appreciate it. Oh, btw, I've got an $800 budget for voicemail, is that feasable?

When you connect hyperterminal to the serial port, communications to the DSU should be instaneous. You will either see a little heart beat on your laptop monitor or the date and time from the DSU. If you hit the enter button, the DSU should ask for the password prompt. Email me, and I will provide you with what is the standard password. The standard password may or may not have been changed by the original installer.
Once you have the password, the DSU will provide you with menus to select from.
Re: the $800 voice mail. It will NOT probably be enough, unless you can find a used one. A 2-port Debut from Comdial runs about $985.00 and a 4-port is about $1,500.00. I will caution you that if you use the Debut system from Comdial you should also place it on a small UPS because the Debut is very toucy about having clean power. If it burps or hiccups because of dirty power they have been known to crash and a lot of times they will not recover unless it goes back to the factory for repair.
