Exactly how do I connect a laptop to a G1632 for VDT programming and does hyperterminal work for this? I tried connecting a phone cord from the laptop to both data ports and couldn't get a connection through hyperterminal but got no response. I checked that the modem was set to the correct settings and also checked the pbx settings via station 10 and everything matched. Am I missing something? Does the phone cord need to be wired different?

If you're trying to connect through your modem, its never going to happen. Unless there are 2 modems. You must use your serial port! Data A is the correct port and hyperterm works fine.
