The sound on several comdial phones is either soft or full of static-hum. I have the the sound lever to high. Is the phone versus handle bad?

Doc there could be several things going bad as that system is very very old. Use the "find an installer link", one office visit should do it. Other than that you could try swapping the handsets with phones that are not giving you trouble. The static sounds more like the handset cord.

It could be a number of things and a bit of basic trouble shooting should narrow it down. The most likely issue is the cords as was said above. 1) Handset cords: Swap the cords from a phone that sounds great to one that sounds bad. If the problem goes away, it is the cord. Buy some new ones at a Radio Shack. 2) Handset: Same as above but do it with the handset while leaving the cord in place. 3) Corrosion on the volume control knob: While on the phone and speaking with someone, move the volume lever around. If it is scratchy and staticy as you move it, you have some oxidation on the volume control. It is a fairly easy repair for a qualified person. 4) Wiring: Move a complete known "good" phone to a location where you have a problem phone. If the problem persists, get a new line cord (make sure it is 4 conductor). If that does not resolve it, you need a good tech to come on site figure out if it is the wiring or the system causing the trouble.

As the system is very old I realize it may need to be upgraded. Can any thing be salvaged? wiring? boards, etc.

Your best bet is to invest in a complete new system. As far as wiring I would have to see it, but most of the time exsisting wiring is OK. Tell us where in Ohio you are located, we may be able to help you.

There are not many systems you could have that used 6414 phones for the main part. I have a stock of cabinets and access to phones. We stopped stocking 3508 sets, but maintain a few 6414's and can repair your sets.
I'm in NW Ohio near Toledo, so if you're West of the line between Lorain and Dayton, I might be able to help out, or if you're somewhere else, I might know of a tech who can help you.
